The best piece of advice I’ve absorbed and incorporated into my blog and brand is to keep showing up even when you think no one is looking. I know this isn’t exactly groundbreaking or even new advice, but I’m here to offer it to you again because it’s a lesson that I think is worth being constantly reminded of. After all, continuously showing up is what got me one of my biggest blogging wins to date!
It was around this time last year, summer of 2018 when I received an email from the Assistant Editor of Sophisticate’s Black Hair Magazine. Their team had come across an Instagram post that I’d posted months prior, and they were interested in publishing it for a feature they called “Trend Watch.” He couldn’t promise me that it would make the final cut, but in case it did they wanted to get the preliminary forms completed ahead of time.
I can’t even tell you how excited I was. Here I was, just two years into my blogging journey and a nationally published magazine wanted to feature me! A magazine I immediately recognized because they’ve been in every hair salon I’ve ever stepped foot in since my childhood. If I didn’t get selected, I was still proud of myself for “showing up” in a space I was pretty new to, and consistently creating high-quality content. Content that even drew their attention in the first place!
For the next few months whenever I noticed they’d published a new issue, I would browse through it to see if I’d been selected. After a few months, I’d started to think they’d decided to go in a different direction, and still, because I was so proud of myself, I wasn’t disappointed. Then at the beginning of the year, I was in Publix getting my groceries for the week, noticed the magazine with a new cover, flipped through to the Trend Watch section, and lo and behold, there I was alongside five other amazing women! An unexpected goal, accomplished just like that!
So, whether you’re a blogger or creative trying to stand out amongst a sea of others, or an employee trying to put yourself in a position for a promotion at work, keep showing up. Even when you feel down or discouraged, keep planting those seeds, having faith they’ll harvest in due time! So how do you do this?
1. By blocking out all the noise and continuing to do you!
2. Affirming and believing that you have what it takes to accomplish everything you desire and so much more!
3. Investing your time and energy into projects that you are passionate about, that makes you happy, and bring some form of value to your life!
With a few more months until the end of the year, let’s keep showing up, and showing out! You may be surprised at what it brings!
