My first trip of 2017 is in the books! As someone who is terrified of flying, being able to say that a couple of months into the year is a huge accomplishment for me! And since the trip happened in January, I should get an extra boost of credit! But I’ve promised myself that in 2017 I’m going to put my fears aside and travel more, no excuses, and this was my first step! It also helped that my bestie was celebrating a huge career milestone that I couldn’t not be there for! So, off I went to San Antonio for a much-needed girls weekend and some rest and relaxation!
Surprisingly, as fearful a flyer as I am, over the years, I’ve realized that being in the air and away from everything is the perfect opportunity for me to get some work done. This trip, I did a little bit of planning for some upcoming posts on the blog. And before I knew it the short two-hour flight from Atlanta to San Antonio was done!
Now, I’m a Texan born and raised, only leaving when I joined the military. But I’d only been to San Antonio once before over ten years ago and wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised! I loved the big city small town vibe San Antonio has. It is a huge military community, and you can tell that is something the city takes great pride in! There is so much to do with plenty of attractions, restaurants, and shopping. As I was there for a mini reunion with my girls, we spent less time sight-seeing and a lot of time enjoying each other’s company.
One of the first things we did was go out to see Hidden Figures. Real talk, I’m so glad I waited to see this movie with my girls! Talk about Girl Power! This movie is so inspirational and motivating. It had us leaving the theater ready to conquer that “one thing” we’d been procrastinating on. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should check it out!
Besides attending my besties events, we also did a lot of catching up and cracking each other up telling stories and reminiscing on old memories! Add on good food, and lots of wine, it turned out to be the perfect way to start off the year! It also left me feeling extremely grateful for these women whom I’ve been friends with for almost fifteen years! And even though we are all grown up and are extremely busy with our families, lives, and careers, it reminded me of all the reasons why continuously nourishing those relations are important. In fact, I’ve listed a few of the reason why a good girl’s weekend is a necessary for us all:
- Your friends remind you to care for self! In the midst of the daily grind of life, it’s extremely easy to put yourself at the bottom of your list of priorities. To take care of others needs before your own, put off your goals, or procrastinate on big decisions for fear of failure or rejection. Your friends are usually the ones to call you out on that behavior in the best possible way!
- Laughter and joy are good for the soul and catching up with your girls will give you doses of both in spades!
- Taking a girls trip can be one of the most relaxing things you do all year. Not having a schedule and being able to wake up when you want, sit around when you want, and lounge around with no judgment is one of the best feelings! And I don’t know about you, but with me, there is very rarely a time at home when I have nothing to do! So any chance I get to “do nothing” I take!
For my next trip I’m actually headed back home to celebrate my 33rd birthday! What exciting trips do you have planned? When was the last time you and your girlfriends had a getaway even if it was for a short time? Let me know in the comments!
